This scene was interesting for me. Uh, this was shot on the first day. When I saw Michael Pitt walk into the room the first time, when we did rehearsal and then shot a couple of versions of it, Michael still had his hat on. I realized that was incorrect for the period - a man would always take his hat off in a room full of women.

So, I went up to our first AD and I said I have a note for Marty, meaning Mr. Scorsese, who was sitting in another room. I said, “How do I do this?” And he said, “I don’t know, no one’s ever given him a note before.” And uh, I said “Well this is kind of important. I need to tell him something.” And he said, “Alright, well he’s in that room watching the monitor.”

So it was sort of the longest walk of my life, walking into that room to give Martin Scorsese a note. Um, and I very tentative…I said, “Marty, I have something to tell you.” He said, “What?” and I said, “You know, Michael, really didn’t, he didn’t take his hat off.” And he went, “Oh my God it’s 1920! Of course he has to take his hat off in a room full of women!” So uh, I breathed a huge sigh of relief and we mentioned it to Michael and he did it and that was that. But, it became a great collaboration after that and Marty was so warm and welcoming any ideas and notes and it was really great. It was a huge relief.
